The Famous Dutch Herring

When you tell a Dutchman that there is new herring, the water flows out of his mouth. Every year around May the new herring is brought in by the fishermen. And the Dutch rush to the fish shops to get them. They eat the fish in the street or in the market where there are little stalls with "De Hollandse Nieuwe". And a big discussion starts about the quality of that year.

People from abroad get goose pimples when they see The Dutch eating this delicious fish. Because it's eaten raw. But when after much hesitation they are persuaded to try one, they fall in love or or never try one again in their life.

Dutch people living all over the world will do almost anything to get the "New Dutch". And also people who have emigrated or have Dutch ancestors will take the opportunity to lay there hands on this typical Dutch fish.
